The My Morning Jacket frontman’s first solo LP in eight years repurposes music originally written for Sofia Coppola collaborations into a meditative, Alice Coltrane-inspired psychedelia.
Jim James will release his fifth solo album, Wowed Out, on August 28, ending an eight-year stretch since twin 2018 releases Uniform Distortion and Uniform Clarity. The project’s origin is unconventional: last fall, James started revisiting instrumental pieces he and composer Brian Reitzell had recorded for film scores in the early 2010s, including work for Sofia Coppola. Left dormant for more than a decade, those fragments became the raw material for a record that threads soul and psychedelia into something unhurried.
The title track, out now with a video, is a study in restraint. A spare arrangement cradles James’ voice as it moves through shifting textures — a gauzy meditation on the condition he calls “wowed out,” a phrase he coined to describe the constant sensory overload of modern life. James has cited Alice Coltrane’s spiritual recordings as a touchstone, particularly the way her music can feel abstract without chasing a dramatic climax. “I wanted these songs to feel like a journey that takes you somewhere rewarding, without always trying for some big dramatic payoff like a massive chorus or a huge guitar solo,” he said in a statement.
An earlier single, “Come Again,” followed a similar path: originally written for a scene in a teddy bear factory, it morphed into a marching psychedelic reflection on finding beauty amid chaos. The album was self-produced by James and arrives after two recent My Morning Jacket records, including the 2025 album Is. To mark the release, James will perform solo at Park City’s Song Summit on August 28, then launch a headline tour beginning November 28 at the Kentucky Performing Arts Brown Theatre in his hometown of Louisville.
