Jon Batiste Announces ‘Black Mozart’ Album, Arriving August 14

The follow-up to *Beethoven Blues* continues Batiste’s piano series, reframing classical music through the lens of Black American traditions. An August release follows a dramatic four-night London residency at KOKO.

Jon Batiste has set an August 14 release for Black Mozart, the next chapter in his ongoing piano series for Verve Label Group. The announcement lands shortly after the artist completed a kaleidoscopic four-night residency at London’s KOKO, where each evening took a different shape—from a full rendition of his Soul score to a night of fan requests and a deep symphonic exploration.

Black Mozart follows Beethoven Blues, which topped Billboard’s Classical Albums chart for over two months after its release last November. Both records examine Western classical repertoire through the traditions of Black American music. Batiste has been blunt about his intent: to unsettle the stiff, class-bound image of composers like Mozart and Beethoven, reminding listeners they were first and foremost improvisers whose work was never meant to be frozen behind museum glass.

The KOKO run—and the dual album cycle—suggest an artist operating far beyond genre silos. Batiste, born on 11/11 and steeped in the New Orleans clubs, has already gathered most major awards. Upcoming performances tied to America’s semiquincentennial and a Super Bowl appearance earlier this year only widen the stage. With Black Mozart, he continues chipping at the mythology, insisting that the classical tradition can hold more than it admits.
