With Jay Weinberg in Nashville, the band called on his father, Max, as second drummer for a version of “Hot Water” at Forest Hills Stadium.
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard’s three-night run at Forest Hills Stadium took a familiar turn on Saturday, but with a different Weinberg behind the kit. A week after former Slipknot drummer Jay Weinberg joined the Australian psych-rock band onstage, the group brought out his father, Max Weinberg, for an unannounced appearance in Queens.
Joey Walker framed the substitution without smoothing over the family connection. Jay had been expected to continue a recurring cameo role, including last weekend at the band’s Field of Visions II festival in Colorado. “He’s down in Nashville, so Jay made a call. ‘Alright, I’m going to call dad,’” Walker told the crowd before introducing the longtime Bruce Springsteen and Conan O’Brien drummer, who drove from Atlantic City.
“I just got nervous,” Walker added as Weinberg walked on with sticks in hand. The two-drummer setup then ran through a lengthy “Hot Water,” leaning into the song’s loping rhythm with an extra layer of pocket.
The Forest Hills run concludes Saturday night.
