A 7-inch pairs the long-running podcast theme “Only Love” with the previously unheard “Crystal Ball,” ahead of her tour with Sleater-Kinney.
Liz Phair’s upcoming Flannel And The Fury tour with Sleater-Kinney now has a physical companion. A limited-edition 7-inch will carry two previously unreleased songs, giving both tracks their first official pressing.
The A-side, “Only Love,” has existed since 2019 as the theme for Lena Dunham’s podcast The C-Words, co-hosted with Alissa Bennett. The show began a non-paywalled re-release under an Audacy distribution deal last year, widening its reach beyond its original subscriber base. The song now moves from podcast intro to collectible object, a small but notable shift for a piece of music that otherwise lived only in the margins.
The B-side, “Crystal Ball,” arrives with less context but completes the single as a proper two-song release. Dunham’s admiration for Phair is well documented; in a 2018 Vogue interview she claimed to have “purposely” had sex once in a house Phair had lived in. Whether that detail informs the music is beside the point. What matters is that Phair is using the tour cycle to pull loose material out of the archive, pairing a functional theme with a fully unheard track.
Snippets of both songs are available now. The 7-inch will be sold during the tour, which begins soon.
