The composer’s first new album in six years arrives October 23 via Temporary Residence, built around one continuous piece of solo piano and subtle electronics.
William Basinski has set October 23 as the release date for Passing the Cup of Sorrows, his first new album in six years. Issued through Temporary Residence, the record is one continuous composition of solo piano and subtle electronic elements. He has shared an excerpt, “Passing the Cup of Sorrows 1.1.”
The title comes from a concept in past-life regression hypnotherapy. In that framework, “passing the cup of sorrows” describes an exchange between two souls in the spirit world—one that helps a spirit understand and forgive a being who caused harm in a past life. Basinski uses that idea as the unexpected basis for the record.
The composer, known for The Disintegration Loops, has also announced a run of fall tour dates across Europe and North America. The schedule includes a Chicago performance at Rockefeller Memorial Chapel with Windy & Carl and Purelink.
