Wavves to Rerecord Cherry Soda Without Max Bemis

The planned Wavves and Say Anything collaboration Cherry Soda will no longer carry Max Bemis’s name. Four days after Bemis cancelled a run of acoustic shows amid allegations that he sent inappropriate messages to underage fans, Wavves’ Nathan Williams announced he is going back into the studio to finish the record as a solo Wavves album.

Williams confirmed the decision on Instagram: “Going back into the studio on Monday and I will finish this as a proper wavves album. I’ll have more announcements soon.” The shift follows a blunt response on his Patreon, where he wrote, “I don’t want to be associated with the guy,” and later added, “Not sure what to say but fuck Max. Fuck Say Anything. I’m sorry y’all. I spent 11 months making this record and Max spent 4 days so I dunno exactly what I’m supposed to do.”

Allegations against Bemis first circulated last month on the Say Anything subreddit, where users shared what were described as flirtatious messages with two teenage fans. Bemis has not commented publicly.

One complication is physical inventory. Williams had previously noted that 10,000 copies of Cherry Soda were already pressed. The album remains available for pre-order at several online retailers, leaving open how the rerecorded version will be handled for existing orders.
