Beyoncé’s second album B’Day turns 20 this week, coinciding with her 45th birthday. The anniversary has been treated more thoroughly than any previous catalog milestone: an extended edition includes remixed and remastered recordings and previously unreleased music, and pre-orders opened for a $150 deluxe vinyl. But the release also includes something that plays nothing at all.

The Bee Keeper Collector’s Box is priced at $948.01 and limited to 500 units. It measures 18 by 14.75 by 14 inches, is handcrafted from solid pine, lined with green velvet, and fitted with a faux gator-skin leather strap and gold hardware. The official website specifies that the box does not come with any vinyl records from Beyoncé’s catalog.

Some fans have posted purchase confirmations; others have criticized the item as exploitative. The box follows Jay-Z’s 30th anniversary collector’s crate for Reasonable Doubt, which sold for $1,500 and included all 13 solo studio albums on vinyl. Neither collector’s item had sold out at the time of writing. The Beyoncé box’s value does not lie in playback or unreleased audio. It is a display object, sold on scarcity and branding, and it sharpens the line between music merchandise and luxury fandom accessory.
