Theo Bleak Turns Solitude Into a Working Document on *Bargaining*

Katie Lynch has been releasing music under the name Theo Bleak since 2021, but she speaks about those early singles and EPs with a certain distance. “It was youthful righteousness, like I was some imparter of knowledge,” she says. Now 31, she describes feeling younger as she gets older, aware of how much more complicated other people’s lives turn out to be. That shift in perspective is embedded in her new mixtape, Bargaining.

The record was not built as a full album. Working entirely alone in Glasgow, Lynch added to it daily, treating each new piece as a demo. She layered her voice with field recordings, fragments of conversation, even the creaks of her home studio chair. At some point, she realized the material had become a complete body of work—and she refused to develop it further. Some of the songs were too painful to revisit. “I didn’t want to develop it any further, because it made me so sick to listen to some of it,” she says.

That rawness is the point, not a flaw. Lynch has tried to quit music several times, but Bargaining gave her a different sense of what her work can be. She says she doesn’t know how she could go back now that she’s seen what it means to be so direct. The result is less a statement than a running document—a reaction to a year rather than a summary of it. And it has changed how she approaches the future: no rush, just the same process of living first and recording only when the material demands it.
