Darren Cunningham arrives at his latest album after eighteen years of refining a fractured, static-laced electronic language — this time with CASISDEAD and Rainy Miller in the frame.
Darren Cunningham’s path to Actress was never linear. Before the alias, there was football in Wolverhampton, DJing in London, painting and writing — detours that shaped one of British electronic music’s most singular discographies. Eighteen years after his 2007 debut ‘Hazyville’, he returns with ‘Radical Frame’, out now on Ninja Tune.
The album gathers what Cunningham has refined across more than ten records: fractured rhythms, small bursts of sound, dancefloor energy mediated by static and melody that appears only partially. It is not a reinvention so much as a consolidation. The edge is sharper, the movement more assured.
Two voices join the record’s orbit. CASISDEAD appears on ‘Live By You’, and Rainy Miller, from Preston, adds another outsider presence. Today the album’s centrepiece ‘Overchord’ arrives alongside ‘Live By You’ and
