Daytime TV will release Rodeo on 19 February via Marshall Records, produced by Pete Hutchings, with new single ‘Meditate’ already out.
Daytime TV have announced a new album, Rodeo, due 19 February via Marshall Records. The record follows a period in which the band’s priorities changed, and its first single, ‘Meditate’, is out now.
The group’s early singles traded in post-punk sharpened by arch wit. Rodeo takes a different route. Frontman Will Irvine spent 2024 in convalescence after a severe, life-threatening autoimmune illness, and the material that emerged leans on melody and immediacy rather than tension and posture. Pete Hutchings, whose credits include Royal Blood, Foals and Gang of Youths, produced.
“When you come close to losing everything, all your inhibitions disappear,” Irvine said. “You stop caring about trying to fit into a specific genre or pleasing anyone else. Rodeo is about stepping boldly into who we really are as a band and as people.”
‘Meditate’ suggests where that leads. Written during a heatwave, it circles a relationship that never quite arrived, holding the missed version of events up against the one that actually happened, then returning to the present. The band’s Matt has described the song as a look back at what could have been, and at the “meditate and medicate” routine he was prescribed while they were writing it.
That tension between looking backwards and landing back in the room runs through the announcement. Marshall Records will release Rodeo on 19 February.
