Jonah Yano Announces New Album Spin, Shares Two Songs

The Montréal and Hokkaidō-written record was finished in Mountain Grove, Ontario, and arrives January 29 via Innovative Leisure.

Jonah Yano has announced a new album. Spin arrives January 29 via Innovative Leisure, with two songs out now: the title track and “Holding On.”

The record was made in stages and in separate places. Yano worked on the songs in Montréal and on the Japanese island of Hokkaidō, then recorded them in Mountain Grove, Ontario. That spread is worth noting because it is the kind of process that usually leaves marks, whether in the arrangements or in the way the album holds together.

Yano is a familiar presence on other people’s records, having turned up alongside BADBADNOTGOOD, Mk.gee, Clairo, Ouri, and Jacques Greene. Spin is a reminder that his own work does not lean on that company. The two new songs demonstrate range without overstating it. “Spin” runs short and builds as it goes, adding pressure rather than volume. “Holding On” is the more direct of the pair, with Yano’s falsetto placed up front over a slow, soul-leaning arrangement.

Spin runs eleven tracks in total, including “Shadow Of A Life,” “The Door,” “Runner,” “Cranberry,” and “Living For Loving You.” Two songs are not enough to describe an album assembled across three locations, but they set a tone: understated on the surface, deliberate underneath.
