Rex Orange County Shares ‘Hannah Montana’, First Single From ‘Dream Fatigue’

Rex Orange County returns with a soft, melodic new single produced with Simon Hessman, ahead of an album whose guest list runs from Daniel Caesar to Turnstile.

Rex Orange County has released ‘Hannah Montana’, the first single from his forthcoming album ‘Dream Fatigue’. Crafted with the Swedish composer and producer Simon Hessman, the track is unhurried and deliberately melodic, built on warmth rather than tension. Its video, made by Rhys Scarabosio, places Rex in the open landscape of Montana, and the setting suits the song’s calm.

The single follows a busy summer for him, including an appearance alongside Tyler, the Creator at All Points East in London.

The more revealing detail sits in the album’s credits. ‘Dream Fatigue’ is credited with a wide cast of guests: Daniel Caesar, Turnstile’s Brendan Yates, Dev Hynes, Mustafa, dexter in the newsagent and Taylor Skye of Jockstrap. That list moves between hushed R&B, art-pop and hardcore without much concern for where the borders usually fall.

‘Hannah Montana’ gives away almost none of that range. As an opening statement it is modest and self-contained, closer to a reset than a declaration. Whether the record’s other voices pull it in different directions is the question the single leaves open, and one it seems in no hurry to answer.
