Cloud Nothings Announce Metal-Leaning Album What Kind of Hell Did You Survive?

Cloud Nothings have announced a new album on Pure Noise, with a first single that pushes the band’s long-running heaviness toward metal. Dylan Baldi says the shift comes from feeling pigeonholed in indie rock.

Cloud Nothings have announced a new album, What Kind of Hell Did You Survive?, arriving on Pure Noise and following 2024’s Final Summer. The record is rooted in metal and heavy rock, and the first single makes that move explicit rather than tentative.

“Death Keeps Me Alive” is built on a slow, doomy riff and Jayson Gerycz’s drumming, which has been the band’s heaviest asset for years. Anyone who remembers Attack on Memory from 2012 knows volume was never the problem. What changes here is direction: Dylan Baldi says the band felt boxed in by the indie rock framing and wanted to show a different side of its interests, naming Queens of the Stone Age, Motörhead, Earth and Electric Wizard as touchstones.

The lyrics follow the sound. Baldi describes drawing on political metal and hardcore, with songs addressing cruel governments, the necessity of community, and a broader anger at the current state of things. “Death Keeps Me Alive” is written in character, from the perspective of an enduring evil that feeds on war and hate and is never fully defeated.

Alex Scalzo-Brown directed the accompanying black-and-white video. The nine-track album includes titles such as “World Destroyer,” “Terror Multiplies” and “This World Is Shit.” UK dates follow in November, with Spanish shows in Zaragoza and Vigo afterward.
