The London group have spent more than a decade building a catalogue that rarely chased the moment it was made in. Their records sit in a post-punk lineage without treating it as a costume, and Jo Bevan’s voice has long been the band’s most recognisable instrument. Releasing through Fierce Panda for much of that run, they have worked at a pace that suits a guitar band more interested in accumulating songs than in staging comebacks.
That makes a sixth album a specific kind of event. Most groups of their generation have either dissolved or settled into anniversary circuits; Desperate Journalist are still writing new material and treating a single as a working part of the machinery rather than a marketing beat. ‘Dust’ is the second signal of what Gilding the Lily will sound like, and the video and tour dates put the band back in front of audiences rather than behind a release schedule.
Six albums in, the position they occupy is less dramatic than it once might have been, and more durable: a band releasing on its own terms, with listeners who have learned to expect the next record rather than demand it.
