Aroma / Posthumous Regurgitation Split: Goregrind’s Grimy Grooves

The Philadelphia duo’s new split release foregrounds pitch-shifted vocals and oompa beats, recorded with the no-fidelity logic of a West Philly basement.

Philadelphia goregrind outfit Aroma have a new split with Posthumous Regurgitation, out now on Headsplit Records. It’s a brief, grimy document of the form at its most tactile: pitch-shifted vocals lurch between absurd and menacing, riffs lean into groove without losing their primitive edge, and the ever-present oompa beat—a staple that, in Aroma’s hands, feels less like a novelty and more like a natural component of their sound.

Recorded with the fidelity of a dungeon in West Philly, far from any crossover metal polish, the split sounds unvarnished and deliberate. The pairing makes sense; both acts share a dedication to the genre’s grisly fundamentals. In a subgenre often defined by extremes of speed and noise, Aroma’s approach finds a strange, almost danceable pulse—if your idea of dancing involves being pummeled by grotesque, gelatinous riffs. It’s a reminder that goregrind’s charm often lies in its complete disregard for anything outside its own ugly logic.
