J Mascis gave himself Rick Rubin’s advice, tracking down the same 1970s Mesa Boogie amp from the band’s debut to fuel lead single “Several Got Away.”
Dinosaur Jr. have confirmed their 13th studio album, There Near, due in late August via Jagjaguwar. J Mascis says he took a page from Rick Rubin’s playbook, seeking out a 1970s Mesa Boogie MK 1—the exact amplifier he played through on the band’s debut four decades ago. “You always hear how Rick Rubin always makes bands sit down and listen to their first album and say let’s get back to that sound,” Mascis explained. “So I just gave myself his advice.”
