Bonobo and Aroof Aftab Connect for ‘Fire On The Water’

The first preview of Bonobo’s new album pairs his atmospheric production with Aftab’s voice, recorded at Neil Young’s Broken Arrow Ranch.

The first single from Bonobo’s upcoming album matches his layered electronics with Aroof Aftab, the Pakistani-American singer and composer whose work has drawn attention for its delicate fusion of South Asian traditions and minimal Western arrangements. ‘Fire On The Water’ arrives today as part of a double release, alongside the club-facing track ‘Drift’.

Both tracks preview ‘Distance In Static’, Bonobo’s new album due September 11th on Ninja Tune. A significant portion of the record was laid down at Neil Young’s Broken Arrow Ranch studio in California — a location that seems to have lent the sessions a particular stillness. The collaboration with Aftab, recorded there, carries a slow-burning intensity that sits somewhere between devotional music and electronic meditation, avoiding simple chorus-driven structures.

For Bonobo, the move toward more atmospheric, patient work feels deliberate after a stretch of high-energy live shows. Pairing the single with the rhythmic ‘Drift’ suggests the album will balance introspection with the club-oriented pulse that has long run through his catalog. Aftab’s presence, meanwhile, signals an artist still sought out for projects that need more than a guest vocal.
