Boyz II Men Join Cody Johnson Onstage for ‘On Bended Knee’ at Stagecoach

Cody Johnson brought out Boyz II Men during his headlining set at Stagecoach on Friday, turning a cover of their 1994 hit into a full-group performance.

Cody Johnson was about halfway through his headlining set at Stagecoach on Friday when he started singing “On Bended Knee.” The 1994 Boyz II Men hit is a lovelorn R&B ballad, not the kind of thing you expect to hear from a country singer on a festival stage. But as Johnson sang the first lines, Nathan Morris, Wanyá Morris, and Shawn Stockman walked out and joined him. The crowd reacted the way crowds do when they hear a song they know by heart.

The Philly soul group has been making surprise appearances at crossover events lately. Last month, they showed up at the 20th anniversary concert of Nashville’s Listening Room, where Brett Young brought them out during his set. That one made sense in a songwriter’s room. This one made sense in a different way — a country headliner covering a 90s R&B ballad, and the actual group showing up to finish it.

Earlier this month, Johnson announced his 10th studio album, Banks of the Trinity, due June 26. He’s been leaning into Texas country and storytelling, but Friday night was about something else: a moment where two audiences met in the middle of a field.
