Newly released police footage captures the March arrest, showing a string of odd exchanges and a legal outcome that sidestepped jail time.
A video from Britney Spears’ March DUI arrest surfaced this week, shedding light on the surreal moments that followed a traffic stop on the evening of May 21. The footage, obtained by The New York Times, shows Spears inviting officers to her home for lasagna and shifting into a British accent as they pressed her on her sobriety.
When an officer asked her to rate her state on a scale of one to ten, she replied, “I could drink probably four bottles of wine and take care of you, I’m an angel.” She had been pulled over for swerving between lanes, which she attributed to phone use. For roughly ten minutes she refused to step out of the car, eventually exiting with the insistence, “I know my rights. I haven’t done anything.” Officers noted she drifted between accents and a childlike voice, talking nonsensically about matters unrelated to the field sobriety test.
Breath tests registered blood alcohol concentrations of .05 and .06 percent, both under California’s legal limit. Still, she was booked on suspicion of driving under the combined influence of alcohol and a stimulant, a separate provision in the state’s vehicle code. The arrest report concluded that her behavior aligned with that combination.
Earlier this month, Spears pleaded guilty to a lesser charge. The deal gives her twelve months probation and a three-month substance abuse program, avoiding further incarceration. She was released the morning after the arrest.
