Glass Beach Announce They’re Done

The Seattle band confirmed the split through their website, with each member already deep into separate work.

The Seattle quartet Glass Beach have ended the band. A statement posted to their website Tuesday confirmed the decision, addressed simply to “our fans.” After ten years and a reputation built largely outside traditional industry channels, the group is stepping away with each member already committed to other things.

Lead singer J, who performs under the name you are an angel, released a new album earlier this year and gave an interview to Stereogum yesterday. Bassist Jonas Newhouse put out an acoustic demos EP on Bandcamp today. Lead guitarist Layne Smith maintains a steady presence as a streamer on Twitch, YouTube, and TikTok. Drummer William White is shifting into community organising.

The band’s note reflected on a career that never relied on the usual machinery. “Our rise truly was about as grassroots as can be, led by word of mouth, reviews, and fan works, and we are absolutely grateful for all of that,” the statement read. That kind of organic growth is harder to sustain now, and Glass Beach seem to have called it before the project became something they had to force.

There is no farewell tour and no final release teasing some grander conclusion. The statement simply marks the end of a decade and leaves the band’s catalogue as it is.
