GWAR Launches Blood Donation Drive for Founding Member Chuck Varga

The band is rallying fans to support Chuck Varga, their longtime member and creative force known as The Sexecutioner, as he undergoes cancer treatment.

GWAR have announced that founding member Chuck Varga, known onstage as The Sexecutioner, is battling cancer. In response, the band has launched a blood donation campaign in his name.

Varga was part of GWAR from 1986 to 1997, a stretch that covered their first five albums, including the 1990 landmark Scumdogs of the Universe. He didn’t just perform. He handled vocals, built special effects, sculpted costumes and set pieces, and created much of the band’s early artwork. After leaving in 1997, he moved to New York City to work in theater, film, and television, though he occasionally returned for special appearances.

The campaign asks fans to donate blood at local centers, with the band encouraging participation through their social channels. It’s a direct, practical response to a serious situation. GWAR’s statement framed it simply: the family is coming together for one of their own.

For a band built on grotesque spectacle and community-driven chaos, this feels less like a publicity move and more like a genuine call to action. Varga helped shape what GWAR became. Now the people who followed that work have a way to give something back.
