At Aftershock, Soulfly’s “Pain” got a different second voice: Jakobe Moreno, son of Chino Moreno, singing the lines his father recorded for the band.
“Pain” is a Soulfly song built for two voices. When it appeared on the band’s 1998 self-titled debut, Chino Moreno sang against Max Cavalera’s delivery, a meeting between the Deftones frontman’s atmosphere and Cavalera’s heavier instincts. The track has held a place in Soulfly’s live sets ever since.
At Aftershock, the second voice was Jakobe Moreno. Chino’s son took the stage with the band to perform the vocal part his father originally laid down, which gives the appearance a certain local logic: Aftershock is a Sacramento festival, and Sacramento is the city the Deftones came out of.
The choice of song carries more weight than the surprise of the guest. Soulfly could have brought Jakobe out for a chorus or a single line. Instead he was handed the full duet, a part tied to one specific recording rather than to the song’s general shape.
