The artist performed new material in an intimate jazz club setting, backed by a small ensemble for the New York shows.
Kelsey Lu has begun a bi-coastal residency at Blue Note’s clubs in New York and Los Angeles, leading into the June release of their first album in seven years, ‘So Help Me God’.
The New York run featured two shows per night on April 16 and 17. At an early set on Friday, the performance centered on the forthcoming record. Lu delivered recent singles like “Portrait of a Lady on Fire” and “Running to Pain,” alongside newer, unreleased songs and a selection of older material.
Moving away from their signature cello for this show, Lu performed solely as a vocalist. They were supported by a trio of Zachary Berns on drums, Christopher “Crow” Venditti on electric bass, cello, and Moog, and Mikael Darmanie on piano and keys. The intimate jazz club environment provided a distinct context for the preview of Lu’s evolving sound.
