The 26-year-old musician faces four felony counts and special allegations, and his label says it will no longer work with him.
Mauricio Tapia, who records and performs as Los Retros, has been charged with four felony counts of unlawful acts with a child under the age of 10, according to Siskiyou Daily News. The 26-year-old also faces special allegations that the victim was vulnerable and that he used a position of trust.
Tapia was arrested on Oct. 8 and booked into Ventura County jail the following day, with bail set at $3 million. He is scheduled to return to court on Oct. 22.
Stones Throw, the independent Los Angeles label that has released his music, responded with a statement saying it learned of the allegations and is severing the relationship. The label noted that his set at its Stones Throw 30 event had already been cancelled before it was aware of the circumstances. “In light of this information, we are taking steps to disassociate ourselves from Tapia and his work,” the statement reads, adding that the label takes the allegations seriously and will keep assessing the situation as more information becomes available.
The label’s move is unusually categorical for a roster artist, and it arrived quickly. What remains is a criminal case in Ventura County, where the next hearing is set for Oct. 22, and a discography that its own label has now publicly stepped away from.
