Cyrus’ tenth album opened at the top of the Billboard 200 and dropped to No. 157 seven days later, the largest second-week fall ever for an album that debuted at No. 1.
The second week is where a debut’s real shape shows, and Miley Cyrus’ tenth album has shown an unusually steep one. Bass Persuades entered the Billboard 200 at No. 1 and fell to No. 157 in its second week, the largest drop for any album that debuted at the top, according to Variety.
The qualifier matters. Steeper falls from No. 1 exist. Bon Jovi’s This House Is Not for Sale sank to No. 169 in 2018, but only after climbing back to the summit nearly two years after release, and Travis Scott’s Days Before Rodeo left the chart entirely after reaching No. 1 in its fourth week. Cyrus’ distinction is specific to the debut week.
The opening figure explains the fall. Bass Persuades moved 61,000 equivalent album units in the week ending Sept. 24, of which 47,000 were album sales and 14,000 were streaming-equivalent units drawn from 14.22 million on-demand streams. That is a sales-led debut, the kind built by a committed fanbase rather than sustained listening, and it does not hold.
It was still a milestone. The album is her sixth to top the chart and her first since 2013’s Bangerz, ending a gap of nearly 13 years. It arrived Sept. 18 as her first release for Atlantic Records and her first under the Miley mononym. Its title track reached No. 35 on the Hot 100, her 24th Top 40 entry.
