The lightweight 37-key instrument puts sound shaping directly under the player’s hands, no menu diving required.
Modal Electronics presented the Element One on the first morning of Superbooth 2026 in Berlin. The new synthesizer is a compact, 37-key instrument designed to let musicians shape sound immediately, without technical barriers. It weighs 4.5 kilograms and uses a steel and polycarbonate enclosure.
The controls are built for hands-on access: 17 dedicated knobs handle core parameters, while aftertouch and a 4-axis joystick extend the expressive range. There is no reliance on nested menus. Modal worked with the Axel Hartmann Design team on the physical design, a collaboration that reinforces the focus on immediate, tactile play.
Modal’s previous instruments, the Argon and Cobalt workstations, demanded deeper synthesis knowledge. The Element One takes a different path. It strips back the complexity without sacrificing nuance, making the gap between intention and result much shorter. The design suggests that Modal is paying attention to musicians who want the rewards of hardware synthesis without the prerequisite study.
Pricing and availability details are not yet confirmed. The synth is being shown publicly for the first time at the Berlin trade fair, which runs through the weekend.
