Molecular Recordings Releases Ma Haiping’s Velocity Unlocked and Structure Series 3

Molecular Recordings has issued Ma Haiping’s four-track Velocity Unlocked alongside the six-track compilation Structure Series 3. Both records stay close to functional hard techno, with few gestures beyond kick, pressure and floor utility.

Molecular Recordings has put out two records that share a narrow brief. Ma Haiping’s Velocity Unlocked is a four-track EP, and Structure Series 3 is a six-track various-artists compilation. Neither release hides behind concept. The label’s field is hard, DJ-facing techno built for large soundsystems and rooms where the kick drum carries the argument.

The title track of Velocity Unlocked sets the terms early: kick, white-noise sweep, synth bells, hi-hats and claps moving through breaks without losing forward motion. “They Once Came” uses whistling toplines and nagging counter-melodies, repetition treated as a tool rather than a trick. “The Android Was Named” pushes a rising-and-falling motif with ride cymbals marking the changes. The details matter, but they remain secondary to pressure and momentum.

Structure Series 3 extends that approach across six tracks. The compilation does not try to widen techno’s vocabulary; it tests the same physical idea at different angles. This is music for the moment when a room needs no explanation, only volume and timing. Molecular’s position is clear: archetypal forms, sharply executed, made to work in the club rather than around it.
