New UK label Music Saves stakes its claim with the debut album from Late Transmissions & Eva Quarterman, a collaboration between seasoned figures that foregrounds the Liverpudlian vocalist in a set of orchestral pop touched by smoke and shadow.
A new independent label appears with intent. Music Saves, a UK venture, launches with ‘The Heart Wants What It Wants’, the debut release from Late Transmissions & Eva Quarterman. The album puts the Liverpudlian vocalist front and centre across a series of modern torch songs, backed by an orchestral pop ensemble with a clear noirish streak.
Behind the project are Davids Balfe and Hughes — the former a onetime member of Teardrop Explodes and founder of Food Records, the latter known for a substantial list of TV and film soundtrack credits. Together, they’ve built a record that shifts between songs such as ‘Lightning Never Strikes Twice’ and ‘A Little Drop Of Poison’, creating a focused sonic spectrum. Quarterman’s voice carries the weight, and the production ensures it fills the room. On ‘I’m Done With London’, the soundstage opens wide on a pressing that rewards volume.
Pressed by Packaged Sounds in High Wycombe, the vinyl arrives in striking artwork with an accompanying lyric and photobook — a statement of intent more than a tentative first step. With this release, Music Saves signals an interest in records that prize clarity, atmosphere, and vocal presence. It’s a debut worth noting, and one that suggests the label’s catalogue will be worth following.
