Olivia Rodrigo Releases “Serena Joy” as 500-Copy CD Single

Olivia Rodrigo gave a cut track from you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love a brief physical-only life last week. Five hundred copies of “Serena Joy” went up through Analog Music Shop in Tustin, California, and sold out within hours. The CD single is the only legal way to hear the song until it reaches streaming services on Monday, August 24th.

The title references Serena Joy from Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale, but the lyrics skip direct narrative allusion. Rodrigo’s warning is plainer: those who look away while people lose their rights shouldn’t expect protection themselves. “They’ll do it to you,” she sings.

The song had been visible in Rodrigo lore for months — fans spotted the title among 18 tracks in a studio photo. In June, she said she loved it but cut it because the album was structured as a chronological relationship account. The eventual home appears to be Daisy Chain Fields, her inaugural all-women festival on August 29th in Irvine. Analog Music Shop framed the three-days-early drop as tied to the festival’s support for women in music and organizations benefiting women and girls.
