The Flaming Lips Announce First New Album in Six Years

The band’s first all-new album in more than six years is due in January, led by ‘God Will Control The Werewolves’. A six-disc edition of their 2006 album also arrives in November.

The Flaming Lips will release their first all-new album in more than six years in January. The record is led by a new single, ‘God Will Control The Werewolves’, and is described as inspired by grief, sci-fi and werewolves.

That combination is not as arbitrary as it might look. The band has long used psych-rock as a frame for surreal storytelling and emotional dislocation, and grief filtered through genre imagery can be more revealing than direct confession. The werewolf motif gives the announcement a peculiar focus: loss, transformation and the monstrous as linked ideas.

Alongside the new album, a six-disc edition of the 2006 album arrives on 13th November. It includes the newly shared demo ‘The Sound Of Failure (2 Demos)’, which places the band’s archival impulse next to its forward motion.

The confirmed details remain spare: a January release, one single, and a reissue that returns a 2006 record to view. Together they show The Flaming Lips working across two timelines at once, revisiting the past while framing the next album around absence and fantasy.
