Dylan Meyer’s new film pairs a Ty Segall score with on-screen appearances and songs from Mannequin Pussy, Sheer Mag, and Tacocat.
Dylan Meyer’s The Wrong Girls opened Friday with a music placement that pulls from a specific corner of contemporary indie rock. Ty Segall composed the score. Mannequin Pussy appear in the film, and tracks by Sheer Mag and Tacocat are also used.
The casting extends beyond the band’s cameo. Kristen Stewart, who stars alongside Alia Shawkat as two codependent friends caught in a case of mistaken identity, has publicly praised Mannequin Pussy before. In a previous interview she described their sound as “a really sultry and positive growl” that pushes against ideas of womanhood. That context adds a layer to the band’s presence rather than reading as a random sync.
Mannequin Pussy framed the film work in collaborative terms, comparing a set to being in a band. Their Instagram statement noted that both require people with different talents working together. It is a modest but visible step for the Philadelphia group, whose music previously appeared in Mare of Easttown.
The combination of Segall’s psych-leaning score and these particular punk and garage acts gives the film a defined musical identity, one that aligns with its scrappy, low-stakes narrative rather than overwhelming it.
