At an April Fool’s Day show, Mammoth WVH’s Wolfgang Van Halen baited the audience with the intro to “Panama” before switching to Rick Astley.
Wolfgang Van Halen executed a classic April Fool’s prank during a recent Mammoth WVH show. He began playing the recognizable opening riff of Van Halen’s “Panama,” a song he performed live for years as a member of the band.
The crowd’s anticipation built quickly, but instead of continuing into the 1984 hit, he pivoted directly into the chord progression of Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up.” The bait and switch served as a live, musical Rick Roll for the entire audience.
The moment highlights Wolfgang’s current position, honoring his legacy while firmly establishing his own path. He’s consistently performed Van Halen songs sparingly with his own band, often reserving them for special occasions. Here, he used that expectation to subvert it entirely, opting for a shared internet joke over nostalgia.
