The band’s pivot to a stadium-filling dance track was prompted by a direct suggestion during a late-night writing session.
The creation of Coldplay’s 2014 single “A Sky Full Of Stars” hinged on a specific moment of guidance. During a late-night writing session in Australia for their album *Ghost Stories*, producer Tim Bergling, known as Avicii, made a direct suggestion to the band.
Guitarist Jonny Buckland recalled the incident, noting that Avicii told them, “Look up there lads, look at the stars.” This literal instruction shifted the track’s focus and became its central lyrical image. The moment marked a deliberate turn toward a more euphoric, dance-oriented sound for the band.
While *Ghost Stories* was largely an introspective project, this collaboration pointed clearly to Coldplay’s future direction. The track’s eventual success as a global stadium anthem confirmed the commercial and artistic viability of that pivot, embedding a producer’s offhand comment into pop music history.
