Hayley Williams and Jeff Tweedy Cover Unknown Mortal Orchestra on Colbert

The pair performed a rendition of UMO’s “Ffunny Ffrends,” preceded by an interview between Tweedy and Nick Offerman.

Hayley Williams brought a special guest to her band’s performance on The Late Show last night. Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy joined her to cover Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s 2010 track “Ffunny Ffrends.” The rendition leaned into the song’s loose, psychedelic groove, with Tweedy adding guitar and backing vocals.

The performance was preceded by a segment featuring Tweedy in conversation with actor Nick Offerman, a longtime friend. Their rapport, which began with Tweedy’s cameo on Parks & Recreation, was the focus, with host Stephen Colbert inquiring about their mutual friendship with author George Saunders.

The appearance marks Tweedy’s second interview on the program since last fall, following the promotion of his solo album “Twilight Override.” The cover choice highlights a specific moment in indie rock’s recent past, framed through the collaborative lens of two distinct vocalists from different generations.
