Myles Kennedy Names His Top Five Vocalists for ‘Vocalist Week’

The Alter Bridge frontman selects the voices that shaped his approach as Consequence launches its week-long focus on singing, revealing a shortlist that includes David Bowie.

Consequence dedicated this week to the craft of singing, rolling out features and a ranked list of the 100 best vocalists. As part of it, Myles Kennedy named his own top five. There’s a particular weight to that choice. Kennedy’s work with Alter Bridge and with Slash and the Conspirators has placed him among the most technically secure and stylistically nimble voices in hard rock over the past two decades, and his selections give a window into where that instrument comes from.

David Bowie appears. The partial preview released ahead of the full feature points to that much. It’s a telling name not just for range but for the way Bowie moved through characters without losing the core of his sound, a quality Kennedy himself relies on when shifting between the melodic demands of Alter Bridge and the rawer edge of the Conspirators.

Alter Bridge is currently two weeks into a North American tour behind their eighth album, which arrived in January. The road schedule doesn’t leave much time for reflection, but Kennedy’s list, in its concision, gets at something lasting: a singer’s relationship to the voices that taught him what was possible. The full rundown will land soon, and it’s worth tracking for anyone who values the difference between mere power and real control.
