The Smashing Pumpkins Record First Song with Butch Vig in Over Three Decades

Billy Corgan confirmed on his Substack that he, James Iha, and Jimmy Chamberlin tracked a new single with the producer of Gish and Siamese Dream. The song is 98% finished and planned for release this year.

Billy Corgan, James Iha, and Jimmy Chamberlin have recorded a song with Butch Vig. It marks the first time the producer has worked with the Smashing Pumpkins since the sessions for 1993’s Siamese Dream. Corgan announced the track during a May 19th livestream on his Substack.

Vig produced the band’s early touchstones, Gish and Siamese Dream, shaping a sound that balanced heavy guitars with melodic clarity. His return comes 32 years later, with Corgan noting the song is “98% done” and will be released in 2026. He offered no title yet, and said the track is tied to a specific purpose he cannot disclose.

The news arrives as the Pumpkins prepare a fall arena tour built around the 30th anniversary of Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. But Corgan was careful to temper expectations about hearing the song on that run. “There’s a timing issue,” he said, doubting they would debut it before its official release.
