Released today from the Isle of Mull, Finlay Birch’s third single ‘Inside Your Mind’ marks the final preview of his debut album Weight Will Unwind (12 June). Live drums, swelling guitars and hazy dream-pop textures expand his sound while staying rooted in emotional honesty and place.
The final single before his debut album Weight Will Unwind finds the Scottish songwriter translating three-year-old obsession into live, widescreen arrangements shaped by the west coast of Scotland.
Inside Your Mind by Finlay Birch
Finlay Birch first emerged with lo-fi bedroom-pop releases during the COVID years, songs born in isolation and circulated independently from Inverclyde. Now based on the Isle of Mull, he has moved into warmer, more collaborative territory. ‘Inside Your Mind’, released today, was written three years ago in Greenock but recorded live between An Tobar, Mull Theatre and a barn on the island itself. The shift in location mirrors the shift in sound: from solitary laptop experiments to arrangements that breathe with place and people.
Produced by long-time collaborator and best friend Dylan Cooper, whose previous credits range across pop and electronic projects, the single leans into organic warmth. Live drums, swelling guitars and a hazy, dreamlike atmosphere replace the earlier restraint. The track builds deliberately: intimate verses give way to a huge, widescreen finale that feels like the emotional subject matter has outgrown its container.

Birch has described the song’s subject as the desire to get inside someone’s head completely while knowing part of them will always remain out of reach. “I wanted this one to feel like it was constantly moving,” he explains. “It’s about wanting to get inside someone’s head and understand every part of them, but the music almost takes over and turns that feeling into something much bigger.” The result sits between indie rock, folk and dream-pop, with guitar textures that recall washed-out shoegaze without ever tipping into nostalgia. The production favours atmosphere over polish, letting the live tracking preserve a sense of space and restraint even as the arrangement expands.
Across nearly a decade of songwriting, Birch has gathered material that now sits together on Weight Will Unwind. Earlier singles ‘Weight Will Unwind’ and ‘I Want You’ introduced listeners to his personal, reflective style. ‘Inside Your Mind’ marks the clearest step yet toward a fuller band sound while retaining the emotional directness that defined his DIY origins. The album, due 12 June, will bring together songs written eight years ago with those finished in the last six months, reflecting themes of longing, memory, isolation and release. The record was tracked largely live over ten days on Mull, an approach that grounds the music in the same landscapes that have shaped Birch’s life since he moved there.

Alongside his music, Birch works as Marketing Manager at An Tobar and Mull Theatre. That dual role in Scotland’s arts sector informs a music that feels both personal and quietly connected to community and place. There is no grand statement here, only careful attention to the weight emotions carry and the space they need to unwind.
‘Inside Your Mind’ does not announce a revolution. It quietly demonstrates how songwriting rooted in emotional honesty can grow into something larger without losing its centre. In an era when many independent releases chase immediacy, Birch’s work insists on patience and precision. The single arrives as the final invitation into Weight Will Unwind, an album that promises to reward close listening. For those who have followed Birch from his bedroom-pop beginnings, it confirms that the move to Mull and to fuller arrangements has only deepened what was already there: a voice that understands how closeness and distance can occupy the same song.
