Nirvana’s “Breed” will serve as the opening theme for the anime adaptation of Sumiko Arai’s manga, with Dave Grohl saying Kurt Cobain would have appreciated the series’ spirit.
The manga series The Guy She Was Interested In Wasn’t A Guy At All wears its musical references openly, so it’s fitting that its anime adaptation will begin with Nirvana. At Anime Expo in Los Angeles on July 3, it was confirmed that the opening theme will be “Breed,” the raucous track from the band’s 1991 album Nevermind.
Created by Sumiko Arai and first published in short installments on Twitter, the story already carries the band’s imprint. The character Mitsuki is introduced in a Nirvana hoodie, and the manga nods to other artists like Turnstile and King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard. Crunchyroll, which is behind the series, paired the announcement with a brief interview between Dave Grohl and Arai.
“I think that Kurt definitely would’ve loved this,” Grohl said. “It seems like the same message, aesthetic, and the vibe — it’s cool.”
Masashi Ishihama will direct the series, set to premiere in January 2027.
