Captured between the Irish band’s debut and global breakthrough, the recording features early performances of “Zombie” and more from a group road-testing future hits.
A newly unearthed live recording from early 1994 places The Cranberries at a precise inflection point. Live at The London Astoria II, 1994, due August 28 through Island/UMe, documents a band already transformed by the gradual success of Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can’t We? but still months away from releasing the album that would make them one of the biggest acts of the decade.
The 15-song set mixes early staples like “Linger,” “Dreams,” and “Pretty” with road-tested material destined for No Need to Argue. “Dreaming My Dreams,” “Ridiculous Thoughts,” “Daffodil Lament,” “Empty,” and an embryonic “Zombie” all appear, played with the confidence of a group that had spent nearly two years touring. Drummer Fergal Lawler recalls the London show as a homecoming after a breakthrough American run. “It was such a buzz playing in the Astoria,” he says. “We were delighted to see a few of our hardcore fans at the front of the stage. I think we felt proud that all our hard work had finally come to fruition.”
The recording also pulls in the non-album track “Liar” and the B-side “So Cold in Ireland,” fleshing out a period when the band’s creative momentum ran ahead of its release schedule. Guitarist Noel Hogan later noted that the material for No Need to Argue was written almost entirely on the road, making this performance less a rehearsal than a snapshot of songs already sharpened into final form.
