After the Mountain Goats released “Candlebox,” Candlebox frontman Kevin Martin reached out to John Darnielle, and a shared Instagram post suggests live dates may follow.
A few days after the Mountain Goats released “Candlebox,” a single that imagines an early-’90s band’s tour with the quasi-alt-rock hitmakers, the two groups are now hinting at real-life shows together. The news arrives via an Instagram post shared by both the Mountain Goats and Candlebox, a screenshot of an apparent text exchange between John Darnielle and Candlebox singer Kevin Martin.
In the messages, Martin writes that he loves the song and wants to set up some dates this fall. Darnielle, suspecting a prank, responds with disbelief. But as both bands have shared the post, this isn’t a leaked private conversation—it’s a premeditated tease. When Stereogum contacted Martin about the track after its release, he confirmed that the Mountain Goats had sent him the song in advance and that he genuinely liked it. The line of communication is not new.
“Candlebox” itself, from the upcoming album Days, is a character sketch of young musicians hoping their lives will change on a tour with Candlebox. The real Martin’s eagerness to respond, and the coordinated social media beat, make the prospect of joint shows feel less like a joke and more like a pragmatic next step. No dates are confirmed, but the gesture is clear.
