Shudder’s ‘V/H/S/MIXTAPE’ Enlists RZA, Flying Lotus, and GWAR for a Sound-Driven Horror Anthology

The ninth chapter in the V/H/S horror anthology will stake its scares on music. Shudder has announced V/H/S/MIXTAPE, a musically themed installment set to stream on October 9, 2026. The film unites an eclectic roster of directors—including Wu-Tang Clan’s RZA, veteran cinematographer Ernest Dickerson (Juice, Bones), David Moreau (MadS), and Renee Zhan—around the idea that sound itself can haunt, possess, and destroy.

The cross-pollination goes deeper. Flying Lotus directs music-video interludes threaded through the anthology, while GWAR makes a featured appearance and Ghost’s Tobias Forge steps behind the camera for the first time with a new music video segment. Zhan’s contribution will include original puppets built by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, promising an unsettling dose of practical effects.

The franchise has never been a stranger to genre experimentation, but MIXTAPE reorients the machinery: the terror isn’t just visual—it’s embedded in the frequencies. The press release frames it as “an electrifying new anthology where music and sound become the source of terror.” For a series built on grainy, anonymous camcorder footage, the influx of recognizable musicians and filmmakers marks a deliberate shift, one that trades some of the low-fi anonymity for a curated, almost concert-like structure. It’s an odd fit on paper, which is likely the point.
