The sprawling edition includes 52 unreleased tracks, remastered audio, and a note from Costello explaining why a golden anniversary felt “preposterous.”
“I thought the whole idea of celebrating a 50th Anniversary of My Aim Is True was preposterous. It made my teeth itch,” Elvis Costello writes in the announcement for a massive new box set. So he’s doing it a year early.
My Aim Is True (49th Anniversary Edition) arrives October 2 on UMe, stuffed with 52 previously unreleased songs, demos, outtakes, and live performances. The original 12-track LP gets a fresh remaster from the analog tapes, and the package adds handwritten lyrics along with essays by Nick Lowe, Rosanne Cash, Peter Wolf, Jim James, and others. A live version of “Watching the Detective” is available now as an early preview.
Costello is currently finishing a 2026 tour with guitarist Charlie Sexton. The box set’s timing — pointedly off the round number — fits a career that has rarely moved in straight lines. Rather than wait for polite nostalgia, the collection digs into the raw, unpolished edges of a debut that reshaped rock songwriting in 1977. It treats the album not as an artifact but as a working document, with all its drafts, false starts, and parallel versions laid out in full.
