SB19’s Lollapalooza Debut Is a Reintroduction

SB19 will be the first Filipino and Southeast Asian act ever booked at Lollapalooza. For much of the American crowd, their set will mark a first encounter with Pinoy pop entirely. That weight isn’t lost on the group. “There’s pressure because we’re introducing P-pop to people who may be hearing it for the first time,” they told Hypebeast. The response, they said, was to prepare with excellence and keep the focus on the reasons they were chosen.

The intention isn’t simply to showcase a genre. It’s to be read clearly. “We hope people walk away seeing us as artists first,” they said. “We write our music, perform it live, and most importantly, we hope they see the Philippines through us as a country full of talent, great stories, and world-class artistry. Being the first is a statement that Filipino music belongs on the global stage.”

That statement carries over to their latest single, “LAWLESS,” which moves between English and Tagalog without explaining itself. The energy is direct, the intent deliberate. “Incorporating our own language creates a connection point that allows people to experience where we come from,” the group explained. The track, they said, represents a braver, more mature sound — a signal of readiness, not arrival.

A run of milestones surrounds this moment — a GRAMMY Museum appearance, a Billboard Music Awards nomination, a sold-out Philippine Arena show — but SB19 treats them as markers of work, not transformation. “It’s important for us to stay grounded and present while continuing to push ourselves toward the level of excellence and caliber we want to achieve.” The Lollapalooza slot is a door opening. The goal is to walk through it as themselves.
