YAO Release “FOR OKINAWA,” a Second Single Anchored in Okinawan History

YAO’s second single makes the collective’s intentions clearer. Where “777” leaned into rebellion and energy, “FOR OKINAWA” slows the focus and points it at a specific history. The track is credited to the full supergroup lineup — Awich, ONE OK ROCK, Paledusk, and CHICO CARLITO — and builds from conversations between Okinawa natives Awich and CHICO CARLITO and their bandmates about the island’s past and what it means to carry that history now.

Taka handled the melody, moving outside his usual approach for what the group describes as an unprecedented composition. The result joins heavy guitar riffs with rap cadences and wide vocal lines, using the contrast to hold attention on the song’s peace-minded theme rather than on any single performance.

The release arrives just before ONE OK ROCK close their DETOX Japan Tour this weekend, ending the nationwide run at the tour’s final shows. Awich has already asked the audience on her Instagram story to learn the lyrics in advance, with the live performance set to function as part of the song’s broader statement. A music video for “FOR OKINAWA” is expected to follow.
