After a clip about not having a favorite song escalated online, the rapper served free burgers at a one-day Cryburger popup.
Vince Staples turned a comment about streaming economics into a literal lunch counter. Asked in a recent video interview to name his best song, he answered with a workingman’s analogy: he doesn’t have a favorite song any more than a McDonald’s cook has a favorite burger. The clip traveled quickly, and when rap-focused accounts treated the response as indifference or an insult to his own catalog, Staples pushed back with his usual bluntness, suggesting he would simply choose a burger next time.
Rather than let the cycle fade, he made the joke physical. On Sunday, Staples ran a Vince Staples Cryburger popup in Los Angeles, offering free burgers to the first 100 customers. He was present at the window, handing out food and leaning into the bit. The move fits a pattern: in 2018, he launched a GoFundMe to raise $2 million for his own retirement, a gesture that read as both joke and critique of how audiences expect artists to perform gratitude.
The popup treated internet scrutiny as material rather than injury. Staples has long used deadpan humor to refuse the roles people try to assign him, and this weekend was no exception.
