Olivia Rodrigo Hands “Expectations” to Chappell Roan for Her First Remix

Rodrigo’s first official remix turns “Expectations” into an Eighties-styled duet, with Chappell Roan writing a new verse and David Byrne playing a fictional game show host.

Olivia Rodrigo has released her first remix, a version of “Expectations” from this year’s You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love, rebuilt around Chappell Roan. The two trade lines over an Eighties-styled arrangement, and Roan contributes a new verse that adjusts the lyrics to add a mediocre female suitor alongside Rodrigo’s originals. The song sits on Rodrigo’s third album, following Sour in 2021 and Guts in 2024, and her third to debut at Number One.

Dan Nigro, who produces both artists, appears in the video, which stages the whole thing as a retro game show called “The Big Expectations Show.” Its host is a fictional figure named Johnny Johnson, played by David Byrne, a piece of casting that gives the clip its comic center. Roan opens the video by noting, dryly, that Olivia does remixes now.

The pairing is not new. Roan opened for Rodrigo on the Sour tour in 2022 and the Guts tour in 2024, and the two performed Roan’s “Hot to Go!” together in Los Angeles. Roan also headlined Daisy Chain Fields Festival, Rodrigo’s inaugural event, held Aug. 29 at Great Park in Irvine, which raised $10 million for women and girls before Melinda French Gates doubled the total to $20 million. Roan’s own two-night Super Graphic Spectacular comes to the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles on Oct. 21 and 22, benefiting trans youth and LGBTQ+ communities.

“I remember her walking into the studio one day and just flat-out saying ‘I don’t give a fuck about what people say anymore. If I like it, then it’s good,'” Rodrigo has said of Roan. “I could tell she actually meant it, too. That’s her magic.” The remix works from roughly that premise: a song treated as something to be handled rather than preserved.
