Dave Grohl explains the intangible “feel” that guides the band’s choice of drummer, following their split with Josh Freese.
Dave Grohl has elaborated on the Foo Fighters’ decision to part ways with touring drummer Josh Freese last year. In a recent interview, he framed the choice as one of fundamental musical chemistry.
Grohl described a drummer’s contribution as being purely about feel, a difficult to define but essential quality. He explained it as a combination of personality, connection, and shared rhythm that either works or doesn’t for the specific group.
“We know what feels best for our band,” Grohl stated, comparing the dynamic to adjusting seasoning in a recipe. His comments focus on the intangible alignment required within the long standing lineup, rather than on any specific critique of Freese’s playing.
The Foo Fighters have since welcomed veteran drummer Josh Freese as a permanent member, following his extensive touring work with the group.
