Eurovision Expands to Asia with New Edition in Bangkok

The European Broadcasting Union confirms a new international edition of the song contest will launch in Thailand this autumn.

The European Broadcasting Union has confirmed the launch of Eurovision Asia. The new international edition of the song contest is scheduled for this autumn in Bangkok.

Ten countries from the Asia-Pacific region have already signed on to compete, with more expected to join. The format will follow the familiar structure of the original contest, featuring live performances and public voting.

This move represents a significant strategic expansion for the Eurovision brand beyond its European core. It follows the establishment of other spin-offs like Eurovision Young Musicians and the American Song Contest.

The decision to base the first edition in Thailand underscores the country’s established media infrastructure and its regional cultural influence. For the EBU, it is a clear attempt to translate a specific model of televised pop spectacle into a new geographic and cultural context.
