The former Magic Gang member returns with a first project under his own name, built around the direct, self-questioning single ‘The Weight’.
Six years after The Magic Gang played their final show at London’s Roundhouse, Jack Kaye is stepping forward with a solo identity. His debut EP, Go Easy, will be released on August 14 via Fascination Street, marking a new chapter shaped by life outside the band—and by the weight of adult responsibility.
The announcement follows a spring debut single, ‘Dora’, and a word-of-mouth set at The Great Escape. Now, new track ‘The Weight’ gives the EP its centre. It’s a guitar-led indie pop song that trades the band’s earlier brightness for something more grounded and lyrically open. Kaye sings about self-doubt, the shock of fresh obligations, and learning to value experiences he once took for granted. Becoming a father and reflecting on his own relationship with his dad, he maps a personal terrain rarely addressed this directly.
“There were lots of big life changes that happened for me around the same time,” Kaye has said. “The end of the band kind of signalled that, and the wave of real, adult life knocked me back a bit.” That feeling of recalibration runs through the song without tipping into confession. The production keeps things uncluttered, letting the details—a phrase, a lifted melody—carry the sentiment.
Kaye will play an EP release show at The George Tavern in London on September 9. In the meantime, ‘The Weight’ is streaming now, offering a clear-eyed entry point into a project that sounds less like a return and more like a restart.
