The five-piece pop group’s first EP arrives after a run of viral singles and small-venue shows, with songwriting built around coming-of-age material rather than the attention itself.
JYT have released their debut EP, Just Your Type. The five-piece arrive at the project after a stretch of intimate live dates and a run of singles that travelled widely online, with more than 550 million views across social platforms reported over the past 120 days.
That number is the context, not the story. A group reaching its first EP with that much attention already attached has to decide what to do with it, and JYT have answered with songs about being young and unsure rather than songs about being watched. The writing draws on what the band have been through and what they are still working out, which is a narrower and more useful brief than a debut usually gets.
“We honestly can’t believe we get to say this,” the group said of the release, describing the tracks as “literally about our lives right now.” They credited the shows as well, saying that meeting audiences around the country made the moment mean more.
The open question is whether the EP holds up away from the short-form attention that carried the singles, and the decision to spend this period playing small rooms suggests the band are aware of it. Just Your Type is out now.
